Hull charities secure £56,000 in grants

 19/11/2008

Rhema Youth Works and the Choices and Rights Disability Coalition have been successful in their bids for grants totalling over £56,000 from the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales. Both charities provide essential services to help local disadvantaged people to play a fuller role in the community. The Lloyds TSB Foundation has made grants worth nearly £2.5 million to 123 charities in Yorkshire since 2007.

Choices and Rights Disability Coalition have received a grant worth nearly £25,000 over two years to support the salary costs of a Disability Discrimination Act advisor. The charity works to help disabled people play a fuller role in the community and ensure that their voice is heard. The new member of staff will provide free advice and support to anyone who feels they have been discriminated against, in areas such as employment, welfare, and consumer issues.

Rhema Youth Works, based in the Newland area of Hull, has been offering facilities and support to young people in the city for over ten years. The three year grant from Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales worth £31,800 will provide salaries for two part-time evening youth workers. These staff will help run a range of activities to give vulnerable young people a better range of choices and chances. These include a young women evening, five-a-side football night and music sessions using the centre’s digital recording studio.

Steve Green, project manager at Rhema Youth Works commented on the difference the grant will make, “The worst thing for young people is to have nothing to do in the evenings. Funding from the Lloyds TSB Foundation offers us a fresh start for our evening work.”

Lloyds TSB Foundation grant manager for Yorkshire, Pat Greenwood, added, “There has always been a great tradition of community involvement across Yorkshire and these charities show how much is being achieved by the voluntary sector.  The Lloyds TSB Foundation is delighted to support these charities’ essential work in Hull.”

The Choices and Rights Disability Coalition can be contacted on 01482 878778 or office@choicesandrights.org.uk with queries about the rights or support available to disabled people in Kingston upon Hull and the East Riding. As an organisation run by and for disabled people, the charity particularly welcomes disabled volunteers, looking to improve their employability skills.

Activities at Rhema Youth Works are open to anyone aged 13-19. Please contact Steve Green for more information about their work on 01482 343 805. New volunteers for the evening sessions would also be very welcome.
